Chemical plants and any other application with flammable particles or gases present must take extra precautions to ensure there is not enough electrical or thermal energy in a circuit to act as an ignition source for the hazardous atmosphere. Intrinsically safe barrier relays operate at low energy levels in order to limit the amount of energy present. These relays are designed so that there is never enough current, voltage, or total energy in the circuit they are controlling to create an explosion.
