An enabling switch is a handheld, portable device that allows operators to safely control machinery while inside the machinery's danger zone. Enabling the slow-speed motion of a machine while a guard door is open, or jogging a robot into position for maintenance access from within the robot's safety enclosure, are just two examples of enabling switch applications.
These enabling switches are 3-position (OFF-ON-OFF) devices that allow the machinery to function only when the switch is pressed halfway. Since operators may react differently to sudden, unexpected events, with some pressing harder on the switch and others letting the switch go all together, the safety system will turn off the machinery if the enabling switch is not maintained in the middle position.
