Enabling switches, also called dead man's switches, provide an operator with a special mode for certain tasks. Models are available as a single grip switch, or with additional momentary pushbuttons, E-stop buttons, indicator LEDs, and home position detection, with pigtail or terminal connection.

These enabling switches are 3-position (OFF-ON-OFF) devices that allow the machinery to function only when the switch is pressed halfway. Since operators may react differently to sudden, unexpected events, with some pressing harder on the switch and others letting the switch go all together, the safety system will turn off the machinery if the enabling switch is not maintained in the middle position.
