Helical gearboxes use helical gears to accomplish the transmission of mechanical power. Unlike spur gears that have teeth cut parallel to the axis of the gear and engage all-at-once with the opposing gear's teeth when in operation, helical gears feature teeth that are cut at an angle so that the teeth of two gears engage a little at a time, starting at one side of the tooth, and become more engaged as the gears rotate. This type of coupling results in a gradual transfer of power and offers quieter operation and higher efficiency than other gearbox types.
