AutomationDirect sells countless pneumatic products, including pneumatic air cylinders. These come quick shipping, highly competitive pricing and our hassle-free warranty. AutomationDirect is your common sense way to buy pneumatic components. But how do you pick the cylinder that is best for your application? We’ve provided some great tools to help in the selection. From our home page click on pneumatic components under shopping categories. Then click on the in-depth tab. If you are new to pneumatics or simply want a handy reference guide, please download our free Pneumatics eBook here. Force applied by the cylinder is often the primary factor and is what determines the bore size. Stroke is simply the length of travel needed for your application. So, lets see how to pick a cylinder based on force. Looking at cylinder sizing on the pneumatics in-depth page, we simply enter the amount of force required and the air pressure available. For example, if we need 50 pounds of force, then increase that force by 25% to overcome friction, pressure drop, and other factors. This calculator tells us we need a minimum 1” bore and the next largest size cylinder available is 1-1/16” or 32mm. It’s important that we go larger since force decreases when bore size decreases. Now that we know our bore size, it’s super easy to buy the cylinder. Click here on the shop tab, then pneumatic air cylinders. Select a bore greater than 1” or you can pick a style cylinder you want and select a bore greater than 1”. Once you have a cylinder that looks like it will work you can click on the product to see more details such as port sizes and mounting as well as accessories. Now, you are now ready to add to our cart along with our accessories. Please see other videos in this pneumatics series to understand speed, mounting options, cylinder styles and other pneumatic components.
