AutomationDirect offers an incredible array of precision motion control products, such as servo systems. But with all these choices how do you choose the best servo for your application? AutomationDirect offers SureServo2 and LS Electric L7C and L7P series drives. All three drives have strengths, so it really depends on what your specific application requires. Do you need extreme position accuracy? The SureServo2 drive offers 24-bit resolution on its motor encoder. That’s over 16 million pulses for every revolution of the motor. The L7P offers 19-bit resolution, and the L7C offers 17-bit resolution which are more than sufficient for many motion applications. All three drives allow electronic gearing to translate these resolutions into a pulse ratio that works for your PLC or controller. Do you need servo motion control on a budget? While all three drives offer this, the L7C offers many advanced features of more expensive drives at a price that is hard to believe. In pulse train mode, for example, the L7C allows changes to electronic gearing on the move. This allows small adjustments for applications, such as encoder following with registration marks. Perhaps you are looking for a hard-wired I/O solution that may eliminate the need for a PLC or computer control. The L7P offers 16 discrete inputs and 8 discrete outputs to accomplish a wide variety of tasks as quickly as possible. Does your application need on-board multi-axis integration? The SureServo2 offers on-board electronic camming so you can interlock two or more servos for many functions, including flying cut-off, rotary shear, and table-based manual profiles! Do you want to set up your system and never home it again? The L7P motors come with a multi-turn absolute encoder with a factory installed replaceable battery to prevent the need for re-homing after power loss. The SureServo2 offers the same feature, but as an optional add-on. With modern applications, the communication needs of your controller may determine which servo system you select as much as any other feature. Some applications may require multiple drives to be controlled from a single PLC. If you need Ethernet control, the SureServo2 drive allows the addition of Ethernet/IP and Modbus/TCP communication modules. For multi-drop serial networks, the L7P offers two connected serial RJ45 ports on the front of the drive. This allows you to control one drive, or a bank of drives just by adding patch cables between them. While all three drives offer serial communication out of the box, I just love the L7P's clean and hassle free solution to create a highly reliable serial network. The L7P also includes a termination resistor so there is no need to worry about messy field terminations during install. Just hook the first drive up to the serial port on your controller and the network is ready to perform! Do you need more power in your application? The SureServo2 offers motors capable of up to 15kW of power at 230 volts, and the L7P can go to 7.5kW at 230 or 460 volts. If this wasn’t enough, all three drives have free software that assists in configuration, auto-tuning, troubleshooting and much more!
