The 2017 GRITS Trophy features the Yellow Steam Works gear as the centerpiece. When you rotate the gear, the FUEL mounted on top of the pneumatic cylinders moves up and down. The beauty of this trophy is it doesn’t require any electrical power or pressurized air – it is completely self-contained. And it’s crazy simple. If I turn this around, you can see the yellow gear is connected to this cylinder via an offset arm. As the yellow gear rotates, it moves the piston in and out so this cylinder acts like an air pump. And that pushes air into or pulls air out of the side cylinders. The rest of this is just plumbing fittings found at the local hardware store. This trophy is one of the most iconic GRITS trophies we’ve ever created, but it only used a couple parts to create the effect. Just goes to show – you don’t have to throw a bunch of technology at a problem to come up with an extremely creative solution.
