M12 cables come in many configurations or codings.

Often we think of these as sensor cables but they are used for so many more applications such as power or networks like ethernet. Although these are sold as sensors, power or network cables, these are actually A coded cables. The coding identifies the key position and type and also the purpose of the cable or connector. There are a number of these letter codes available. Aside from the very common A coded cables the other common types are D coded intended for ethernet and L coded for power distribution. Here’s a sample of the many types used. Note that on some styles such as L, a single pin may be of the opposite gender. This is all part of the standard coding and in the case of L code this odd pin is the ground. So when shopping for M12 cables pay attention to any code labels or compare the pinout to a chart such as this to ensure you get the right cable the first time.
