AutomationDirect is your common sense way to buy pneumatic components. So, what is a pneumatic cylinder? Pneumatic cylinders, sometimes called pneumatic actuators, are the workhorse of industrial pneumatic systems. They are used for clamping, positioning, lifting, and a multitude of other linear motion functions that would be impossible or impractical with electrical devices. Standard cylinders are like the name implies, simply a cylinder with a piston inside. The piston drives a rod within the cylinder. The inside diameter of the cylinder is referred to as the bore. The outside diameter is generally measured to determine bore size since you usually cannot access the ID to measure. The distance that the piston and rod travel is the stroke length. As air is allowed in this end it pushes the piston and rod to the opposite end, this is the extended position. Air would then be allowed to flow into this nose end and the cylinder retracts. Keep in mind that regardless of the direction we want to travel, the air on the backside of the piston must have a way to exhaust to allow movement. There are some cylinders that use an internal spring to retract or extend instead of air. These single-acting cylinders are generally only available in smaller bores and shorter strokes. These can easily be identified because there is only a single port on one end. There are a variety of styles of cylinders. These are often available in metric and inch sizes. Construction is commonly a combination of aluminum, steel, and stainless steel with some made entirely from stainless for environments that require that. Some may be made with other specific materials for high temperature or other unique applications. Some units have a magnet within the pistons so that external switches can detect position. As you can see there are many types of cylinders with many diverse features. AutomationDirect… the Common sense way to buy Industrial Controls.
