Magnetic proximity sensors are used for non-contact object detection beyond the normal limits of inductive sensors. Used with a separate damping magnet, they offer very long sensing ranges and can detect magnets through walls of non-ferrous metal, stainless steel, aluminum, plastic or wood.

Magnetic sensors use state-of-the-art GMR (Giant Magneto Resistive effect) technology. The measuring cell consists of resistors with several extremely fine ferromagnetic and non-magnetic layers. The electrical resistance of these layers is changed when an external magnetic field is applied. This influence on the electrical resistance can be detected, causing the sensor to switch. Since magnetic fields penetrate all non-magnetizable materials, the sensors can detect magnets through walls made of non-ferrous metal, stainless steel, aluminum, plastic, or wood.
Magnetic proximity sensors typically have a detection range three to four times greater than inductive sensors, allowing for much better mounting flexibility. They can even be mounted inside an aluminum box without impacting their sensing ability.
