Inductive proximity sensors detect the presence of metallic objects at close range (typically up to 1.5 inches). They do this by creating an electromagnetic field around the sensing surface that is disrupted when a metallic object crosses within the field. A change in the electromagnetic field's amplitude caused by this object will be detected by a threshold circuit within the sensor, signaling the presence of the object to a connected control device such as a PLC or relay.
Ferrous metals allow the greatest distances to the sensor; other metals may reduce detection range. Flush-mounted sensors are embeddable (flush with mounting surface); semi- and non-flush sensors allow longer sensing distances, and their sensing face must protrude from/beyond the mounting surface.
Low-cost, reliable sensors are available in an array of shapes, sizes and with special features for a wide range of applications.
